Owning a successful business is more than just about making money; efficient planning and strategy are needed to be successful. Business owners have two choices for developing their business: to stay as a small informal company or to expand their business ventures. Most entrepreneurs tend to choose the latter because of several benefits. Business expansion can be done in different ways but the most commonly method is via franchising.

Franchising is the opening of additional company operations. This approach is similar to chain stores. Franchising increases the parent company’s profit and sales. The parent company provides licenses to other businesses for selling their products and services. Examples of such franchises include fast food chains and retail stores. A business franchise is beneficial to both the franchisor and franchisee in several ways.

One benefit of franchising is the lower capital requirement. Rather than opening a second store, franchisors can limit their costs by opening a chain store. Once a franchisee acquires one branch, the franchisor will only need to pay for training and administrative aspects. Franchisees will also need to finance the rent, staff, and other aspects of the business. However, franchisees may need to have a significant amount of cash at hand before they can acquire the franchise. Although they may pay an upfront fee, franchisees will be assisted by the parent company at the start of the business. This includes arranging the lease agreements, designing and constructing the store, and marketing strategies. (more…)

In a cash-strapped world, the pay you get from your regular job may not be enough to pay off your debts and expenses. A lot of people resort to small-scale business franchising in hopes of striking it rich, ridding themselves of debt, and obtaining financial freedom. They become the owners of a humble stall in a shopping district, which acts as a secondary source of income for the part-time entrepreneur. In some cases, this small franchise may even become their main profession.

According to the 2007 Economic Census released by the United States Census Bureau, 10% of all establishments in the country are franchises. The franchise business generates 17% of the total revenues created by establishments nationwide-a fairly large piece of the pie to say the least. Three out of four franchise businesses are run by franchisees or the people given the job of marketing a particular brand. Hence, everyone is getting into small-scale business.

What makes franchising such a hit among the masses is that it requires no degree in business management. Most franchisees are just regular people seeking a second source of income for their growing expenses. The humble stall in a mall or the park can ensure financial success in the long run.

Perhaps success is not measured by how much wealth a person has earned throughout a single lifetime, but rather by how much a person has learned and accomplished. The slow and steady growth of franchises engages regular people in the competitive world of entrepreneurship. There may be ups and downs along the road; but the hard way is oftentimes the right way. Read the history behind top franchises and they will tell the same story: hardships won are worth enduring, not just for the eventual success, but for the lessons learned. (more…)
