Is gun control necessary?

Abstract:

It seems that since the words "the right to bear arms" were written down on a document that would later become this nations constitution there has been debate, argument, and controversy over the correct definition and meaning of such a loaded statement.

The facts have been tainted and buried in a cloud of rumors and skewed statistics formed by those who advocate gun rights instead of gun control....

i dont think that anyone in the entire world could be more stupid than the people that have written the things that ive read today. if i do recall this is a free country and if we want to protact ourselves we should be able to do so. now dont get me wrong, there should be restrictions on say, convicts, but you can not just cut guns out. if we as citizens are not allowed to have guns then i dont thing that law enforcement should either, and if we didnt have that we couldnt fight for ourselves. now, if someone desides that one day there going to go out and kill a hundred people but they didnt have a gun, do you not think that there going to find another way to do it. because a gun is not the only way for sombody to die. and if your going to tell us that we cant have a gun then you might as well tell us that were not allowed to swim in the ocean or that we cant drive our own cars. gus dont kill people, people with guns kill people, o and btw; this is a sixteen yr old girl telling you this, so you might need to feel a little stupid seeing as how im smarter than all of yall put together :) kbye*

you are an idiot! if you think everyone should have a gun, then you should think about how many accidental shootings there have been. people are not safe with guns. more people are going to get hurt or die if everyone has guns.

I am a seventeen year old girl, and I think you're mistaken in a few parts. Just telling us not to have guns doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to drive our cars or swim in the ocean. I com from a school that has had many threats of shootings, bombings, and hit lists, and I'd prefer it if people couldn't get to guns. The law enforcement, hunting squads, and other government facilities should be the only ones to handle guns and other weapons, since it doesn't do much good to have them unless for protection, which the law enforcement will have for you. In the worst case scenario, you can take classes on how to protect yourself with your own bare hands. And if you truly ARE smater than all of us, stop typing like a preteen hitting puberty and learn English.

"right, cus using deadly force is the solution to everything." i can not begin to explain to you how easy it is to walk into a heavy populated area and start shooting a ton of random civilians,my point being, its too easy to kill people with guns!

I would like to ask the author of this piece what "the people" in the 2nd Amendment means. If this is a collective right, therefore much more restrictive to individuals, then what does the same phrase, "the people" mean in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th amendments? Are they too collective rights or individual rights? If they are collective, then free speech is not a right enjoyed by individuals, but by the society and can be restricted. This is a constitutional slippery slope and if it is ruled as a collective right, the 2nd Amendment could see serious changes to our rights under the rest of the Bill of Rights.

The only way to truly change the 2nd Amendment is to pass another amendment to overturn the 2nd as was done in 1933 with the passage of the 21st Amendment, which overturned the Volstead Act and the 18th Amendment which created prohibition.

Firearms, whether we like it or not, are an individual right as the states enjoy the right to have a militia. It deals with two separate, but joined rights. As our society has evolved, so to must our Constitution. The 2nd Amendment may be outdated, but to overturn it without a new amendment jeopardizes our other rights as well.

Thousands of people die each year, not just because of guns.
Remember, Weapons are just simply a tool, they DO NOT KILL, the PERSON KILLS. i let you have an opinion, but i would just fill you in on some facts before you start accusations that "guns kill people"

Gun control IS necessary for 2 reasons.
(a) There are guns that are made for one specific reason, to kill people. Guns such as these have to be controlled and allocated to selected few, such as law enforcement officers. Some Americans feel just because it is a right you HAVE to perform the action it is protecting.
(b) There are people that feel the need to over react to certain actions. If some burglary were to occur in your home and you caught the person, grabbed a loaded gun and chased them away, do you have the right to shoot them? No, if you gun down a person who just stole your television your reaction does not suit the offense, hence resulting in the drop of all opposing charges, and you are then charged with murder to the enth degree.

Gun control would not abolish America's right to bare arms, but it would control a lethal item, much like America's drug control. Sure it is not working well, But it is there and does stop many people from using and puts many unlawful people away for life.

Mark,

The complete statement of the second ammendment is as follows: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

It leads with a caveat that a well regulated Militia is necessary, it seems fairly clear that "people" here refers to members of a Militia. I see no such caveats for the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th ammendment.
