It never felt sweeter to be home for the Las Positas College Lady Hawks basketball team. They played their last home game of the season at the Nest against Skyline College on Feb. 10 and were victorious with a final score of Hawks 70 and Skyline 64.
The game started with the Hawks dominating the court, able to score 11 points within minutes of the first half. The Hawks' lead began to grow smaller and smaller as Skyline stepped up their offense. Skyline was able to lead the game with six minutes left in the first half. They continued their roll and kept one step ahead of the Hawks. Skyline led the game at half time with a score of Hawks 33 and Skyline 35. Things went from good to bad for the Hawks it seemed during that first half.
When the Hawks came back for the second half they came back stronger and fired up. They were able to gain the lead back within minutes into the second half. With 14 minutes left in the first half the Hawks were leading 47 to 34. This time, they held onto the lead. The tables were turned. With 8:40 left in the game the Hawks led at 51 to 47.
"They played hard, history was made. They go out with a win," said assistant coach Eddie Arnold. Instead of Skyline finishing strong, the Lady Hawks came back and pulled off a storybook ending. They were able to finish their last home game with a victory.
Following the game was a post-season celebration for the team. Head coach Toni West presented flowers for the players and their families. "We had a really good season, I'm very proud of the players. They all stepped up, and I can't wait until they are sophomores," said an enthusiastic coach West.
Despite having played the last home game of the season, the Lady Hawks will go on to play against Foothill College in Los Altos on Feb. 14.
Lady Hawks' fans need not to be disappointed. There is still plenty in store for the team. Feb. 21 is the Regional Play-in Games, Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 are the Regional Play-offs. From there, we will have to see where they go. "I'm looking forward to playoffs," said coach West.
