In order to raise awareness for Battle of the Bands the Associated Students of Las Positas College (ASLPC) placed fake citation flyers on student and facaltiy cars. Campus securtiy officer, Sean Prather, said, "ASLPC needed approval to put up any flyers, placed on bulletin boards or cars."
On March 9, ASLPC got a call and e-mail from security telling them that they could not put these flyers out. ASLPC was told to stop and if there was any flyers thrown in the parking lot they would have to clean it up.
Prather said, "Posting flyers without approval can be a misdemeanor."
However, ASLPC only got a warning. Kris Gilmour from ASLPC said, "We wanted the event to be big." The members of ASLPC did not think it would be that big of a deal.
"We figured we would do it first. We were afraid of getting denied," said Gilmour. The ASLPC recently attended a confrence that gave them tips on how to advertise. Gilmour said, "one tip that we got from the conference was that you could always try something once."
ASLPC got the idea that they would be able to put the flyers out and once someone told them to stop, they would stop. The main problem with this idea was that ASLPC did not get approval from administration.
ASLPC also advertised the event by writing on sidewalks of the campus with chalk. Accoring to Gilmour, Stan Barn---campus supervisor---was not happy about the chalk. He told ASLPC that they could write on the sidewalks as long as they cleaned it up the next day.
ASLPC was told that they needed approval and they did not bother to seek it. On a much lighter note, "The citations made a lot of people laugh," said Gilmour.
